Stem cell research offers new hope in the areas of cancer treatment as well as life extension. The regulation of genetic engineering aims to assess and manage the risks of developing genetically modified organisms (GMO), including commercial food crops and fish. Although mired in ethical debate, the fast-growing field of biotech offers many employment opportunities.

At the smallest scale, mechanical engineering becomes nanotechnology, one goal of which is to build molecules and materials via microsynthesis. Current areas of mechanical engineering research in nanotechnology include nanofilters, nanofilms, and nanostructures such as microtubules. Self-assembly of these structures may lead to new breakthroughs in artificial tissue generation. Micron-scale mechanical components such as springs, gears, and heat-transfer devices are fabricated from a variety of substrate materials such as silicon, glass and polymers like SU8. Biomechanics applies traditional engineering methodology to the analysis of biological systems. By copying the efficiency of nature, the study of biomechanics aids in creating prosthetic limbs and artificial organs for medical application.

Civil Engineering Programs

Civil engineers design and oversee construction projects and infrastructure systems in both the public and private sectors. Civil engineering programs typically take three to five years, and courses include physics, mathematics, project management, design and specific topics in civil engineering. Materials science is closely related to civil engineering. It studies the fundamental characteristics of materials, and deals with mixtures such as asphalt concrete, strong metals like aluminum and steel, and novel polymers including carbon fiber. Civil engineering technicians assist civil engineers in the development of industrial and municipal infrastructure projects. The annual wage of civil engineers with a bachelors was roughly $82,220 in 2015, while civil engineering technicians with an associates degree ranged closer to $50,000 per year.

The subdiscipline of structural engineering governs construction of buildings, bridges, tunnels, and off-shore structures. This involves identifying the loads which act upon a structure, and the forces and stresses which arise within that structure due to external stresses. How can the structure successfully support and resist those loads? The structural engineer takes into account both material considerations such as strength, stiffness, and stability of the structure, as well as other design considerations including cost, safety and sustainability. Due to the nature of some loading conditions, wind engineering and earthquake engineering have developed as specialties within structural engineering.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Assemblers and fabricators assemble finished products and the parts that go into them. Machinists and tool and die makers set up and operate a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools. Metal and plastic machine workers set up and operate machines that cut, shape, and form metal and plastic materials or pieces. Painting and coating workers handle machines that spray or extrude paint onto a wide range of products, including cars, jewelry, and ceramics.
